As we start the fall 2011 nursing programs at Beckfield College the new round of students sitting in the classrooms are definitely a different composition than we have ever seen before.

As the healthcare career field continues to grow, the increasing job opportunities for Coding and Billing Specialists, Medical Assistants, Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses and Registered Nurses with their Bachelor’s Degree are especially on the rise.

Health care delivery in the Northern Kentucky/ Greater Cincinnati area has always been competitive. Who pays the best? Where do you get the most benefits as an employee? These are questions health care workers usually considered when looking for a position. Since 2000, with more awareness of health care consumers, fewer insurance benefits, higher insurance premiums, and health care becoming more business focused, local hospitals have been competing for your health care dollars

Is there really a reason for a registered nurse (RN) to put the time and money toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)? Sure, the various higher educational institutions are going to say yes, but what are the thoughts in the field of nursing on this subject? After all, the nursing shortage is not in crisis mode at the present time.  So, what’s the need?

100% of Beckfield College’s first Practical Nursing class passed the NCLEX-PN Licensure Examination upon first try. Wow! I can’t tell you how proud this statistic makes me as the Dean of Nursing at Beckfield College. A perfect pass rate won’t last forever, but this benchmark is evidence of a challenging curriculum and engaged students who want to thrive in nursing.

As a nursing school faculty member, I receive multiple emails weekly about up and coming trends, news, and opinions from various sources. Among these is the ANA Smart Brief, a daily emailed newsletter specifically about the nursing field.  In a recent post, I found an article about simulation in nursing (Rebecca Hendren).

( U5TRN2EW6E28 ) In April of 2010, the U.S Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the release of $267 million from the Recovery Act Funds for new Health IT Extension Centers.  In February 2010, The White House announced a total of nearly $1 billion in “Recovery Act awards to help health care providers advance the adoption and meaningful use of health information technology.” The release of funds is a direct result of the passing of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, offering a direct impact to the HIT industry that is “expected to support tens of thousands of jobs from nurses and pharmacy techs to IT technicians and trainers.”

Not many people can say they love what they do for a living, let alone list specific reasons why. For me, it’s easy these days.  I help people set a course to work toward a new future!  I am honored to be working as a Nursing Admissions Coordinator at Beckfield College. 

As the Dean of Nursing, I welcome new nursing students to our programs at Beckfield College during two of our four terms each year. To ensure I get to know each and every student, I teach the first nursing class. I don’t make things easy for them, as every quarter in the program continues to escalate in difficulty and intensity. I disclose to them how challenging it is going to be while learning about each student’s ambitions and any personal experiences that led them to the profession of nursing.
