These were the words of Cincinnati’s Local 12 CBS Health Edge Reporter and Morning Anchor Liz Bonis as she warmly spoke to a small group of Beckfield College practical nursing graduates about her experiences as a dietician, personal trainer, reporter, and as the daughter of a nurse.  She spoke about the next step for each of the graduates as they prepare to launch their careers and spread their wings, freefalling to their next step where they will either learn to fly on their own or be caught by the many people in their lives supporting their goals and dreams.

I believe a rigorous higher education curriculum must be accompanied by professional expectations that allow for successful professionals to routinely go above and beyond the call of duty.   As Dean of the Criminal Justice Department at Beckfield College, I have witnessed the field of criminal justice grow in function while continuing to demand increased professionalism from employees. My approach to meeting this need is to provide our students with rigorous academics, state-of-the-art equipment for training, and a focus on the intangible elements of leadership, integrity and discipline.  I demand this of myself, my faculty and my students.  Why shouldn’t we demand more of our students than just straight A’s?

(Q24CWE2ACFX8) The call to serve our country is strong. I should know. I served on the USS Spruance as Signalman in the US Navy from 1994 to 1996, as well as in the inactive ready reserve through 2002. In my current profession as the Assistant Director of Financial Aid at Beckfield College in Greater Cincinnati, I have the privilege to also serve as the College’s VA Certifying Official. In this capacity, I help guide fellow veterans with their utilization of the educational benefits available to veterans from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
