Beckfield College Offers Virtual Fire Arms Training to Students and Local Law Enforcement

Florence, KY (September 28, 2009) Use of force by police officers is necessary and often controversial, but by using virtual technology with today’s weapons of choice in the field, the new digital small arms training simulator at Beckfield College will provide safe and effective training for students and officers in the field.

This new Fire Arms Training System (FATS) generates real life experiences through state-of-the-art virtual technology and provides the most advanced hands-on training possible. This highly realistic, interactive HD simulator trains students in real-time shoot-don't shoot, judgmental use of force scenarios involving policing situations, jail experiences, and simulated security circumstances. It allows for all aspects of firearms training including marksmanship, critical thinking, decision-making and tactical strategies. The FATS simulator enables individuals to work with various weapons, including a 9 mm Glock 17, chemical spray and tasers. Students at Beckfield College will begin working with this simulator at the start of the new term in October.

“This simulator is the ultimate training tool for our students and officers on the streets,” commented Dr. Jack Brown, Dean of the Criminal Justice program at Beckfield College.  “Expectations of people in the field of criminal justice have been elevated to new heights of overview and criticism. This new level of training will provide them every advantage possible to safely and effectively perform their duties.”

Continuing its 25 year tradition of working with the community, Beckfield College is working with local law enforcement agencies to offer training opportunities at its campuses in Florence, Kentucky and Springdale, Ohio.   There are a few other simulators in the area, but Beckfield College’s simulator is the most technologically advanced model, offering over 400 high definition use of force scenario options and allowing for non-tethered weapons.

“I have experiences with the older versions of the simulator. This new simulator will help officers with decision making,” described Captain Darrin Giovin of the Kenton County Police Department.   Kenton County plans to add this simulator at Beckfield College to their training schedule. “The more training, the more prepared our officers are.”

Beckfield College’s Criminal Justice Program has been expanding their faculty and technology to ensure students receive the most thorough educational offerings. Instructors teach and mentor students using years of practical experience coupled with state-of-the-art technology and fully equipped crime labs. Combining these elements with a rigorous curriculum, Beckfield College criminal justice students are more than prepared for the field upon graduation.
