Beckfield College Faculty Member Receives Statewide Master Teacher Award
Florence, KY (December 14,2011) Beckfield College Instructor Valerie Simmons was honored with a Master Teacher Award in Recognition of an Outstanding Job Performed for Students from the Ohio Association of Career Colleges and Schools at their Annual Awards Meeting in Columbus, Ohio last month. Simmons is an Assistant Librarian and Writing Instructor at the Beckfield College’s Tri-County Cincinnati, Ohio Campus.
“As an instructor, Ms. Simmons has excelled at making her students feel comfortable expressing their own unique voices and reinforcing the relevance of writing skills to the their future careers,” described Edward Rito, Campus Director of the Beckfield College Tri-County Campus. “She has taken her students on innovative field trips and endeavored to give students more opportunities to experience writing in a hands-on fashion. Whenever anyone stops by Ms. Simmons’ class for a visit, they are sure to find her using her wonderful sense of humor to liven up the class discussions and help her students relax and understand that her classroom is a safe place to engage in the writing process.”
Simmons has an extensive background in the library sciences, having served as the Head of Information Services at the Lane Public Library in Oxford, Ohio, and as an assistant in the Children’s Department of the Hamilton, Ohio Library. Simmons is now serving as the Co-Advisor for Tri-County’s new chapter of the National Technical Honor Society and works as an After Dark librarian for Ohio’s Know It Now.Org statewide virtual reference service, a highly successful virtual reference program in the United States.
Outside of the classroom, Simmons can usually be found in the library helping students from her classes and other classes to make use of the research databases and print resources that she manages in her position as Assistant Librarian. She is also often sitting at the tables with students, assisting them in writing and revision.
