The Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Technology is designed to prepare candidates in the professional knowledge and skills which will qualify them for employment in a health care facility.
Upon completion of the program, graduates are able to demonstrate:
· working knowledge of the national diagnosis and procedural coding systems
· working knowledge to abstract and code from a medical record
· understanding of HIPPA and EMR (electronic medical records)
· knowledge of insurance processing and the claims appeal process
· ability to manage patient accounts and monitoring reimbursement
Students in the last quarter of this program are required to complete an externship of 160 hours under the direct supervision of qualified personnel at a health care facility, and under general supervision of instructors.
Graduates are eligible to sit for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) examination.
Mandates from all levels of government have generated a high demand for trained professionals in the field of health information technology, including medical administrative assistants, front office coordinators, medical receptionists, insurance and billing specialists, coding specialists, and insurance auditors.
This program has been approved by the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, the Ohio State Board of Career Colleges and Schools, and the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools.
