3 Tips for Acing Your Medical Assistant Exam

“I like taking exams”, said no one ever. The truth is many of us have experienced test anxiety at one point in our lives.

Before you take your medical assistant exam, you should feel prepared and confident you’ll pass.

In order to help you during this stressful time, we have 3 tips that will help you study and ensure you pass the test.

1. Find The Right Resources

After finishing up the medical assistant certification program, you’re one step closer. All that is getting in your way is studying for the test. One way to guarantee you pass if by gathering the right studying resources.

The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) offers a test outline as a guide before you begin studying. You should take advantage of this resource to know what to expect from this test.

You could also take a review course you brush up on all the material you learned while in the program and that perhaps you forgot about. Find an accredited review exam course in your area.

Use AAMA recommended texts books to guide you through the studying process. In these textbooks, you will find longer explanations to questions that will be on the test.

2. Develop a Study Strategy

Before you start studying for the exam, develop a strategy and stick with it. Ask yourself how much time can you realistically devote to studying in a day.

If you can set aside 2 hours a day, then you need to shut-off everything else during this time. Go to a place with few distractions, where you won’t be bothered by family members or noise.

Do you prefer to study in the morning when your mind is clear? perhaps, you rather do it at night when you can shut off the rest of the world.

Some people study better in a silent environment such as a library, and other perfect some noise, like a coffee shop.

Make a plan of what you expect to cover in each study session. If you have more difficulty with certain subjects you should devote more time to those sections.

Another option is to study in a group or with another person. When you do this, you can learn from other people, especially in areas you have more difficulty with.

3. Practice Questions

The best way to test if your studying techniques are working out is by taking practice exams.

When you practice these questions you’re also practicing your test-taking skills. This technique will also let you know your speed while taking exams.

Perhaps you take more time during a section because you’re not as comfortable with that particular material. This gives you the opportunity to go back and study that section.

Practice questions also help you identify your weaknesses and correct them before taking the real exam.
