Beckfield College Recognized with Top Honors at National PBL Business Competition in Nashville

(Florence, KY)   Beckfield College business students showcased their strength in the business field at the Future Business Leaders of America – Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) National Leadership Conference in Nashville on June 24–27.  Three Beckfield College students from the Florence, KY Campus earned four top ten finishes, beating out students from major universities and colleges across the country.  Participants from across the United States and two countries were in attendance for this exciting conference to sharpen their core business skills, expand their networks, and participate in more than 55 business and business-related competitive events.

Ed Villaverde, James Massengale, and Wayne Strickland all participated successfully in a state competition in Kentucky in April that qualified them for the national competition.  There was no shortage of success.  These three Beckfield College business students participated in four of the competitions at the national level and placed in the top ten in all four categories –100% success!  That level of success was no easy feat.  There were more than 1,800 students who participated in the conference from 190 colleges.  Beckfield College students surpassed the work of students from Rutgers University, University of Pittsburgh, University of Nebraska, and many other business colleges!

“We saw the advisor for the University of North Carolina tweeted how excited he was to have two top ten finishes!” noted Diane Wolfer, president of Beckfield College.  “Our Beckfield College students brought home four top ten finishes.  It’s so impressive!”

Wayne Strickland (Independence, Kentucky) competed in Sales Presentation and came home with a first place trophy.  James Massengale (Price Hill/Cincinnati, Ohio) competed Business Communication and brought home a sixth place finish. Ed Villaverde (Independence, Kentucky) competed in Retail Management and placed tenth.  The team of James Massengale and Ed Villaverde competed in Emerging Business Issues and brought home a 4th place award.

“I couldn’t have been more proud of what James, Wayne and Ed accomplished in Nashville.  Their hard work, focus and desire to be the best paid big dividends.  They did an outstanding job representing Beckfield College,” said Charles V. Richardson, Dean, Business & Technology and PBL Advisor to the students at Beckfield College’s campus in Florence, Kentucky.

Beckfield College is currently celebrating thirty years in the Greater Cincinnati area, focused on delivering high quality academics to provide students the education and tools needed to achieve career goals.  All three of these competitors work full-time while attending business classes at night to earn their Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.   Each has responsibilities for children and actively participates in the Phi Beta Lambda Business Fraternity chapter at Beckfield College.  The national conference and competition was a fulfilling experience for each of them.

“The national competition offered fantastic opportunity to network with students from across the country, as well as in-field business professionals,” described Ed Villaverde.  “Participating in this competition has enabled me to be more confident in who I am and my abilities to present to the public. As a student of a proprietary school, I am more confident now in the education that I am receiving here at Beckfield College. We were able to compete against several big name schools across the country and won.”

Ed Villaverde not only competed in this event, but is the individual student at Beckfield College who pushed to relaunch the dormant Phi Beta Lambda chapter at the Northern Kentucky campus.   These three students, along with other members of the business fraternity at Beckfield College, held fundraisers and put in long hours to generate the funds to participate in the state and national competitions.  The experience and accolades certainly have proven fruitful.

“For me, working together with my teammates to accomplish the goal and receive their support, as well as providing it to them, was one of the greatest parts of participating in the competition,” declared Wayne Strickland.  “It really was one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had!”
