Travel Nursing

What Is Travel Nursing?

Travel Nursing: What’s It All About

Ever wonder what travel nursing is all about?

If you’re already a nurse, it could be the perfect opportunity for you to get a change of scenery while still growing your career.

In case you’re considering becoming a nurse, read on. It’s an exciting, alternative career path for nurses with insatiable wanderlust.

What Exactly Is Travel Nursing?

There are different types of travel nurses out there.

The first types of travel nurses are hired to work in specific locations for set amounts of time. The location, and oftentimes the duration, is up to you.

The second types are hired to escort patients who need medical attention from point A to point B. These are much shorter contracts. They also allow the travel nurse to maintain one permanent residence.

Long-Contract Travel Nurses

Long-contract travel nurses usually sign 13-week contracts at medical facilities with staffing shortages.

This is a perfect option for the traveling nurse who wants to spend some time getting to know new places. It’s also a great choice for those “snowbirds” seeking the best weather in the country at all times!

Since travel nurses are usually brought in due to shortages, the medical facility is often willing to pay more than the standard hourly rate.

Over half of traveling nurses make up to $37 per hour. Most of the time, housing, travel, and cost of living will also be reimbursed on top of hourly pay.

Long-contract travel nurses tend to be permanent employees of a travel nurse staffing agency. This means they usually get excellent health benefits, as well.

Short Trip Travel Nurses

Short trip travel nurses usually accompany a patient who needs medical attention on a plane to a destination. If a patient gets injured out of their home country, some insurance policies will require them to return to their home country for medical care.

In this instance, a travel nurse would assist the patient with all their travel needs. She will check vitals and administer any necessary medical care on the journey. These contracts usually last up to a week.

Short trip travel nursing is an amazing opportunity for those who wish to maintain their permanent residence, but see more of the world. These contracts pay hourly rates for every hour spent abroad in addition to lodging, taxis, and meal reimbursement.

This could be the career for you if you’re one of those people who like to immerse themselves in their work. It’s a work hard, play hard lifestyle – don’t forget that a week working usually merits the next week completely off!

Is Travel Nursing for You?

Can you see yourself as a traveling nurse?

Great pay, the ability to see the world, a unique job title – the pros tend to outweigh the cons when it comes to this interesting career path.

Plus, employment projections for nurses are looking good. Job growth is expected to rise by a whopping 9 percent by 2030.
