Beckfield College receives CCNE accreditation for nursing program

Beckfield College’s nursing program has received a major accreditation boost that will provide more career opportunities for students and graduates while helping hospitals hire additional nurses.

Beckfield College Registered Nurse (RN) to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program has been accredited by The Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Beckfield College has a Northern Kentucky campus on Spiral Drive in Florence.

The CCNE is the accrediting body of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), and is officially recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education as a national accreditation agency. CCNE Accreditation ensures a nursing program’s curriculum meets strict standards and assures the public that the nursing program meets the quality and commitment toward these high standards.

CCNE accreditation is a voluntary, self-regulatory process that evaluates all aspects of a nursing program, including support systems for students, faculty proficiency, curriculum, and graduation requirements.

“With Beckfield College and the School of Nursing’s RN to BSN Online program earning the CCNE accreditation, this opens the access for nursing students to participate in federally funded and state grants and scholarship programs,” said Beckfield College Dean of Nursing Dr. Deborah Smith-Clay. “Also, graduates from this program qualify to attend other accredited schools to pursue advanced studies such as a master’s degree in nursing. Graduates have an advantage for hire as potential employers acknowledge that CCNE accreditation denotes a certain level of quality.”

News of the accreditation comes as the nation’s healthcare system is facing tremendous challenges and is in need of highly-educated nurses.

“We pride ourselves on providing distinguished nursing education for our students, and gaining CCNE accreditation for our RN to BSN Online program is a symbol of such excellence,” said Diane Wolfer, College President and CFO of Beckfield College. “Beckfield College is honored to have the privilege of providing additional BSN prepared Nurses to the Greater Cincinnati area hospitals,”

According to a report from the Institute of Medicine, nurses’ roles, responsibilities and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that has been created by the federal Affordable Care Act and to advance improvements in America’s increasingly complex health system.

“To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor’s degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates,” according to the report.

Beckfield BSN graduates could also help Kentucky hospitals earn the coveted Magnet designation.

Developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association, the Magnet Recognition Program recognizes healthcare organizations that provide the very best in nursing care.  In order for a hospital to be Magnet status it must have 80 percent of its nurses hold a BSN.

There are currently seven Magnet status hospitals in Kentucky, including Northern Kentucky’s St. Elizabeth Healthcare, which has Magnet status hospitals in Edgewood, Covington and Grant County.

The CCNE accreditation will also increase Beckfield nursing students’ eligibility for national scholarships, according to Dr. Smith-Clay.

Beckfield College is a degree granting institution of higher learning dedicated to preparing learners for relevant professional, technical, and business careers in a diverse, ethical, student-centered environment.

Academics are offered at the Florence campus at Tri-County-Cincinnati, and online.
